Client showcase: Thorntree Press

At Talk Science to Me, we’re passionate about science. In fact, some of our favourite topics are things like proteomics, biobanking and landmine-detecting rats. But would it surprise you to learn that Talk Science to Me is about much more than just science?

ttp-avatarAMOne of our major clients, Thorntree Press, is an independent publisher based in Portland, Oregon. Thorntree Press specializes in books about relationships, in particular non-traditional relationship models. Eve Rickert, Talk Science to Me founder and mastermind, is also a co-owner of Thorntree Press, along with her partner Franklin Veaux.

Last year, Eve and Franklin co-authored Thorntree Press’s debut release, More Than Two: A practical guide to ethical polyamory, which has already sold more than 10,000 copies. (It’s also just come out on audiobook!) This was followed by The Husband Swap: A true story of unconventional love and its e-book companion guide, Lessons in Love and Life to My Younger Self, both by Louisa Leontiades. Coming soon are The Game Changer: A memoir of disruptive love, also by Franklin, and Stories from the Polycule: Real life in polyamorous families, an anthology compiled by Dr. Elisabeth Sheff.

For these projects, Talk Science to Me has provided full-service publication management, including project management, developmental and/or substantive editing, copy-editing, and proofreading. We have also designed the book covers (pictured below) and interior layouts, run crowdfunding campaigns, and managed marketing, printing, and distribution.Thorntree Press covers

This makes for a very busy, and often overlapping, publication schedule. On any given day, one book could be undergoing a substantive edit, with another being copy-edited, a third in the design and proofreading stage, and yet another going to press! This is all made possible by meticulous project management and the contributions of several members of the Talk Science to Me team. Eve has taken on much of the project management, as well as developmental and substantive editing; Roma Ilnyckyj and I have provided copy-editing and proofreading; and Franklin, Mari Chijiiwa, and Val Heimpel were the designers.

Each book has a distinct story and message, and Talk Science to Me has helped ensure that each unique story comes through, from the level of editing to the design elements chosen. The process is very collaborative, and we’re thrilled to be able to work with these talented authors to help them tell their stories.

Thorntree Press’s books are available from amazon.ca, amazon.com, amazon.co.uk and Powell’s. And stay tuned—there are already three books in the works for 2016!
